Kawambwa MMD rejects Chitika

KAWAMBWA MMD district and constituency officials have rejected the party’s intended imposition of Elizabeth Chitika-Molobeka as their parliamentary candidate in this year’s election.

According to well-placed sources in the MMD district leadership, the party officials submitted to a team of three ministers who are assessing the party strength in Luapula that they would vote for the opposition if Kawambwa Patriotic Front ‘rebel’ member of parliament Chitika was imposed on them.
“There are three cabinet ministers here who have been sent by President Rupiah Banda to come and assess the situation on the ground for our party. We have Honourable finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, Honourable tourism minister Catherine Namugala and Honourable mines minister Maxwell Mwale,” the sources said.

“And both our officials at constituency and district levels submitted that we go with Mr Dustan Mwansa who is the party’s favoured candidate on the grassroots. This man has been topping the list ever since the applications started and he is a long-time MMD loyalist in the area. He is a local businessman whom we know very well, and we have told the ministers that if the party rejects Mr Mwansa, then we will vote for a PF candidate.”

The sources complained that Chitika could not be imposed on them because she had not left the opposition PF.

They said it would be easier to sell Mwansa to the electorate since he had always been ahead of two other candidates, former Chienge district commissioner Samuel Chewe and the 2006 MMD losing candidate, Kabwe Chongo.

“We have seen Honourable Sylvia Masebo resign from the MMD to join PF. But we have never seen Honourable Chitika do that. When PF expelled her she filed for an injunction in the courts, so she is still a PF member and she cannot be imposed on us,” said the sources.

“In any case there is no reason the party can impose a stranger on us as if there are no capable people in the party. And we thank these three ministers who have at least been sober minded. They are not like Honourable Peter Daka who threatened us that if we reject Madam Chitika, then we will be disciplined. That is wrong for a leader because we are the people who understand the situation on the ground. In fact in our view, Honourable Daka has no idea about Kawambwa as a district.”
