UPND Backs LAZ Over Public Media

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has backed Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) president Musa Mwenya's recent statement that the public media is biased in its coverage of political parties.
UPND National Trustee Martha Mushipe has expressed displeasure at the partisan stance taken by the public media in their news coverage.
Mrs. Mushipe who is a lawyer by profession has told Qfm in an interview that it is unfortunate
that ZNBC which is supposed to be a public service broadcaster has been derailed from
fulfilling its mandate of serving the public by the government.
She says the national
broadcaster has been turned into a tool for political propaganda by the ruling party and that this makes it difficult
for other political stakeholders to express their views using the national broadcaster.
She added that journalists in the public media work underextreme intimidation from those in authority making it difficult for them to discharge their duties in a professional manner.
She says as the country heads towards the tripartite elections, it is important for government to allow the media operate freely without any form of interference.
And Mrs. Mushipe has said the party leadership will issue a comprehensive statement on the move by the Supreme Court of Zambia to dismiss the appeal by former Communications Minister William Harrington and ten Civil Society Organizations against the High Court ruling that cleared education Minister Dora Siliya of breach of the Constitution when she awarded a contract to RP capital to evaluate Zamtel assets.
