Three councilors from Vice president George Kunda's constituency Muchinga have today announced their defection to the opposition United Party for National Development UPND.
And UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has demanded that republican president Rupiah Banda dissolves parliament to allow for fair campaigns to take place.
Mr. Hichilema has claimed that government ministers are using state resources to quietly campaign in the name of inspecting projects.
He says the abuse of resources is taking place in the open because of the delay by President Banda to dissolve parliament. Mr. Hichilema states that the UPND is ready for the elections, adding that victory is assured.
Meanwhile the MMD councilors who have defected to the opposition UPND have cited the failure by the MMD to lead to people to people's expectations as the basis for their resignation.
The defectors say the MMD has no chance of winning this year's elections because of the type of leadership being provided in the party. Andrew Mpyakula of Chibale ward spoke on behalf of the defectors.

Leaks in from Lusaka Central Police have revealed that a docket has been opened against owners and editors of the Zambian Watchdog website for criminal offenses. This follows a criminal libel complaint to the police this afternoon by the PF chairman for local government Given Lubinda. According to the Police source, Lubinda complained that the website published a defaming article bordering on criminal activities. The site claimed that Lubinda and PF had received $42M from Afghanistan and planned to send Zambian youths to assist the American soldiers in the war there.
The Police are since looking for both owner/s and editors of the Watchdog. The source disclosed that officers working on the docket will tomorrow visit ZICTA to establish the source.
This is the second time that the Watchdog has hit head-on with the law after the Mathew Mohan publication that attacked Zambian Judges. The complainant in the first case was Amos Malupenga of The Post who mentioned and attested that the editor of the site was/is Emmanuel Mwamba (late FTJ press aid). Mwamba was incarcerated in prison for a few days and is currently on bail.
Other internet reports have indicated that ownership of the site has since changed hands in the last 4 weeks to the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema. The reports have further stated that the current editor is UPND’s deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa (who has conspicuously been quiet on Radios in the last 4 weeks) and been collaborating with presidential press aid Dickson Jere.
