Habitat For Humanity Zambia (HFHZ) Country Director Joseph Munsanje says the escalating number of Orphans could be attributed to HIV/AIDS which puts them into desperate situations.
Mr. Munsanje stated that as a response to the negative affects that HIV/AIDS posed on the victims’ family especially on children, HFHZ would this year build 220 vulnerable groups housing which would benefit 1,440 families.
He noted that children in most circumstance are faced with displacement once their parents die and were forced to go on the streets where they spend nights in the cold.
“it is sad to see young boys and girls rooming streets at night, therefore as habitat we would like to see that at least we reduce the risk of exposing children to sexual and physical abuse at the hands of people that pretend to help at yet they might intend to exploit the innocent children’s that have already suffered a lot form the loss of their parents” said Munsanje.
He said people in the country should come out and help the orphans and vulnerable in society if development was to be enhanced.
He noted that more than 60% of people in Zambia live without adequate shelter and below the poverty line which posses a major health problem for the rest of the population.
Mr. Munsanje said by helping the needy in society through initiatives like build a home for a person in need Zambia could help reduce the poverty levels and the margin between the rich and the poor.
He said Help Change a Families Life Forever programs through which HFHZ would this year build houses in Kaoma, Lusaka, Ndola , Luanshya and other parts of the country to help alleviate poverty and reduce the risks of HIV infections amongst Children.
