Respect The Rights Of Your Subjects, Traditional Chiefs Urged

The Human Rights Commission HRC has called on traditional leaders to respect the rights of their subjects.Commission Communication and Public Relations Manager Samuel Kasankha, however, states that the traditional leaders have a right to endorse their preferred candidates.
Mr. Kasankha in an interview  says the commission is on high alert to ensure that the rights of Zambian voters are protected before, during and after the general elections.
Mr. Kasankhas comments come following Chief Mushota of the Chishinga people of Kawambwa district in Luapula province who is alleged to have vowed to punish any of his subjects campaigning for the opposition Patriotic Front.
The Human Rights Commission Public Relations Manager explains that the chiefs should realize that their subjects come from different backgrounds with different political affiliations.
Mr. Kasankha has since urged the electoral stakeholders to educate the traditional leaders on the importance of respecting their subjects.
Meanwhile Political Analyst Dante Saunders says traditional leaders risk losing respect from their subjects if they continue engaging in partisan politics.
